MYRTOS BEACH - Myrtos is the most famous beach in Kefalonia. Located on the northwestern side of the island and 9 km away from the village of St Euphemia. The beach is famous worldwide, and has continuously blue flag awards- it is considered one of the most stunning beaches in the Mediterranean. It is surrounded by high cliffs and it has unique white sand. In August Myrtos hosts the “Cultural Summer”, with concerts of Greek and foreign singers.
Near to Argostoli we meet two more cosmopolitan beaches: Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos, golden sand beaches with excellent organization. One more beach with sand is Avithos, near the airport and even more southern the beaches Trapezaki, Lourdas, great in extent with many amenities: water sports, restaurants and several shops. On the east we find Katelio, a small village with a beautiful beach which gives life to the few inhabitants during the summer. A few minutes away you find the beaches Ratzakli, Kaminia and Munda. In Kaminia you will find the refuge of turtle Careta – Careta, quiet sandy beach with shallow waters ideal for children. Also, the beach of Skala is located at the southeastern edge of the island with a length of 3 km, sandy with several small peddles. You'll also find plenty of restaurants and cafes to enjoy better your swim.
On the east of the island we meet the beaches Poros and Antisamos. In Poros you find sand and peddles, but also small platforms on the rocks where the more adventurous can dive. Antisamos just a few minutes from the town of Sami, is considered to be a nice trail for hikers, with crystal clear waters and several trees that offer shade and rest. What’s more it became famous by the movie “The Captain Corelli's Mandolin”.
North to Kefalonia we find th beaches: Dafnoudi, Foki, Doliha, Eblisi (most cosmopolitan the last), which is located in a lush landscape of cypress trees and olive trees. Foki is a small sheltered bay with incredible water color with trees close to the sea. In addition under the rocks there are caves that create a small paradise. In the west we find Asso, St Jerusalem and Alaties. In fact, enjoying your swim in the small picturesque seaside village overlooking the Venetian castle is something stunning (Asso). Also, we mention that those who have a yacht, then you will know beaches and areas where access by land is impossible.
In Lixouri 2 km from the city we find Lepeda beach, with the sand having a brown color and further south is the vast sea of Xi, with the special feature, red sand, with clear shallow waters. Atherasis a quiet beach located in the northern part of the peninsula of Paliki and also the beach of St Kyriaki (great beach and vulnerable to northerly winds). Further west we find Petani and Platia Ammos, the latter is named as “New Myrtos”. It is not so well known and hardly accessible, since you have to descend 330 steps. Not a place for shade, but the colors in the sunset will reward you for your trouble.
