KEFALONIA CITIES, LIXOURI - Lixouri is one of the most picturesque cities on the island and the second  most populous after Argostoli. It is a quiet town that was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1953 - it was completely destroyed. Lixouri is the capital of municipality Palliki, including 14 municipal districts and 22 villages in an area of 145 sq km2 with a population of 6,500 inhabitants. In 1543 the town was first mentioned in a document and had a fairly quick development - in the census of 1583 it had 581 inhabitants. Later Lixouri claimed to be the capital of the island, which was transferred from the Castle of St George, but eventually she came to Argostoli. Lixouri changed radically after 1800, as roads, churches and many public buildings were built. In the period of British rule - occupation of the Ioanian Islands, Lixouri was the seat of the Concorde Club, which played an important role in the union of the island with the Greece. On September 14, 1848 about 200 armed villagers tried to conquer the city by the British and clashed with them but unfortunately, the uprising failed. Lixouri, Kefalonia Cities
